Kidney disease often develops silently and may not cause symptoms until a significant amount of kidney function has already been lost. Kidney function assessment helps identify kidney problems at an early stage, particularly in patients with diabetes, hypertension, recurrent kidney stones, autoimmune diseases, or a family history of kidney disease. Symptoms such as swelling of the feet, frothy urine, reduced urine output, fatigue, uncontrolled blood pressure, or unexplained anemia may indicate underlying kidney dysfunction and require further evaluation.
Many patients believe that a normal creatinine level means normal kidney function, but kidney assessment involves much more than a single blood test. Evaluation typically includes serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urine examination, urine protein measurement, blood pressure assessment, electrolyte testing, and kidney ultrasound when indicated. In selected patients, additional investigations may be required to identify underlying causes such as glomerular disease, autoimmune conditions, or inherited kidney disorders.
The primary goal of kidney function assessment is to identify kidney disease early, determine its cause, monitor progression, and initiate treatment before irreversible damage occurs. Regular monitoring is especially important for patients with diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and those taking long-term medications that may affect kidney health. Early intervention, risk factor control, and appropriate treatment can slow disease progression, preserve kidney function, and reduce the likelihood of dialysis or kidney transplantation in the future.
