Kidney Stone Evaluation & Prevention

Finding stone causes and preventing future recurrence episodes

Kidney Stone Evaluation & Prevention
  • Kidney Stones Often Return Unless the Cause is Identified

Kidney stones are one of the most common causes of severe flank pain and can lead to recurrent episodes if the underlying reason for stone formation is not addressed. Patients may experience sudden severe pain in the back or side, blood in urine, burning during urination, nausea, vomiting, or recurrent urinary infections. While treatment removes existing stones, preventing future stone formation requires understanding why the stones developed in the first place.

  • A Detailed Evaluation Helps Identify Why Stones Are Forming

Not all kidney stones are the same. Calcium stones, uric acid stones, struvite stones, and cystine stones have different causes and require different preventive strategies. Evaluation may include stone analysis, urine examination, blood tests, metabolic workup, imaging studies, and in selected patients, a 24-hour urine analysis to assess calcium, oxalate, citrate, uric acid, sodium, and urine volume. This helps identify dietary, metabolic, or hormonal factors contributing to stone formation.

  • Prevention is the Most Effective Treatment for Recurrent Stones

The risk of developing another kidney stone can be significantly reduced through individualized preventive measures. Treatment may include increased fluid intake, dietary modifications, reducing salt consumption, controlling animal protein intake, and medications to correct metabolic abnormalities when required. Patients with recurrent stones, family history of kidney stones, or stones occurring at a young age benefit particularly from a comprehensive metabolic evaluation. The goal is not only to treat the current stone but to prevent future stone episodes, reduce hospital visits, and preserve long-term kidney health.
